We often hear of spouses following their partner for an assignment abroad. As exciting as the prospects seem initially, adjustment can be difficult.
Studies have shown that in recent times, the number of accompanying spouses has increased. Often there are families relocating abroad. Here are a few tips to help you settle in more easily:
- Explore the new city with an open mind. A new culture is always daunting at first, but find yourself a few tours to sign up on and make a few friends while you are at it. Contact us for help locating these for you.
- Get introduced to other expats in your neighbourhood. Your relocation provider or the company/embassy your partner works with should be able to help you with these introductions. So build a supportive network.
- The loss of a professional identity can be especially frustrating for women who are unable to work abroad. If you are up to looking for a job, find something that interests you. There are a lot of not for profits in India that could also use your expertise and are happy to provide employment opportunities. This may also give you an opportunity to explore the culture more intimately.
- Children’s lives are often feel disrupted by the sudden changes. You need to be the shock absorber for them.
- Go back to school! A new country give you the opportunity to sigh up for many learning experiences – In India specifically, you can choose from a variety of art and cultural activities as well. Make the most of these!
- Many expats choose to blog about their experiences and this seems like a great outlet and a way to connect with others with similar experiences.
